Check If iPhone is Factory IMEI Unlocked

Have you bought an iPhone, new or second-hand? The first thing you need to do is see if it has been locked to a carrier or not.

Unlocked phones are useful because you are not tied to using a specific carrier and, if you travel a lot, you can use any SIM card that you want, regardless of where you are. Well, you can check to see if an iPhone is locked in two different ways.

Method 1:

The obvious way to test it is to pop in a SIM card from an alternative carrier to the one you use. Just change the card over and restart your iPhone. If it works, the name of the carrier will show up on the front screen, up in the status bar. If the iPhone is locked, an error message will appear, requesting that the correct card is put in no_sim_card_installed_ios

Method 2:

Another way to check is to use a popular online service. It’s called IMEI.info and it can access a massive database containing IMEI codes.

This service will be able to tell you very quickly if your device is locked to a carrier and which one. To use the service you need your IMEI code and you can get this in five ways:

  1. If you bought a brand-new iPhone ( not on contract ), check the box and you should see the IMEI code on the box sticker.
  2. The second way is to ensure that you have a working SIM card in the phone, go to the Phone app and dial *#06#. The code will appear on the screen, write it down.iphone_imei
  3. The third way is to open Settings > General and tap n About. At the bottom of the menu, you will see the IMEI code. iphone- -imei
  4. Another way is to open iTunes with your iPhone connected. On the Device summary screen for the iPhone you should see the phone number associated with the device; click this and your IMEI number will appear. itunes-imei
  5. Lastly, look on the back of your iPhone, towards the bottom of the case; you should see the IMEI number engraved there. iphone- -rear-imei

What’s Next?

Once you have the IMEI code, go to IMEI.info and input the code. You will see a host of information about the iPhone appear on the screen. You cannot go any further until you either log in (if you have an account) or register for a new account. Once you have done this, click the button for SIM Lock and Warranty and then on Check Apple iPhone Details.

On the next screen, more detailed information will appear and the last piece of information tells you whether the device is locked or not. If it is, you can try contacting the carrier.

Provided you do not have a contract, most will unlock it for free; others may make a small charge. Alternatively, you can run an internet search for IMEI Unlock Services but do be careful; not all of them are reputable.
