Back in February, iOS users rejoiced at the release of Evasi0n, the most popular jailbreak tool to date. Evasi0n allowed virtually all iOS devices running on iOS 6 to be successfully jailbroken and was downloaded millions of times. Subsequent firmware upgrades by Apple did not affect the jailbreak until iOS 6.1.3 was released. Any fault on an iOS device that resulted in a complete restore would have the effect of upgrading and wiping out the jailbreak. Those on A5 or above devices are unable to downgrade their firmware or re-jailbreak as there is no support and a new jailbreak is not expected until iOS 7 is released.

So, it may come as a surprise to learn that there may be a way round it after all. A tool called Semi-Restore claims to be able to restore your device without affecting your jailbreak. It is currently in Beta testing but it will be available for Mac, Linux and Windows users, as well as a SSH version. It will apparently work on iOS 5.0 to 6.1.2. The developer, @Coolstar, states that the tool will take around 5-10 minutes to carry out the process and users must have a PC running one of the supported operating systems. Your device must have OpenSSH and APT 0.7installed on it and you must have a SSH client on your PC. The Semi-Restore website also lists a few important notes, including the need for a full back up before attempting to restore.

On closer inspection, the Semi-Restore looks to be a wrapper for iLEX R.A.T, which stands for Remove All Tweaks. What it does is individually removes all installed apps and tweaks except for Cydia defaults. It is mainly used in the event of the iOS device entering a state where safe mode cannot be accessed, where your device is frozen on a specific screen but can still be recognized by your computer or if you can get into safe mode but can’t remove a troublesome tweak. It’s a useful way of removing jailbreak tweaks and apps without having to delete them one at a time.

It’s also useful to those on A5 or above devices, who cannot downgrade, even with SSH blobs and APTickets and where a restore cannot be carried out if you want to keep hold of the jailbreak. Take a look at this short video showing how iLEX R.A.T works.
While Semi-Restore isn’t exactly a restore tool it can be useful to help fix reboot loop issues or to get rid of tweaks that are causing problems, although in a simpler manner than iLEX. R.A.T.
